For August Aux :: 058, Portland based art-director and artist Rob Lewis curated a playlist that highlights that career and contributions of legendary jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. Sanders possesses one of the most distinct tenor saxophone sounds in Jazz history, raw and abrasive but harmonically rich and heavy with overtones. Although he made is name in expressionistic, nearly anarchic free Jazz in John Coltrane’s late ensembles of the mid-’60s, Sanders’ later music is guided by more graceful concerns.
"This short collection of songs is my way of paying homage to the inimitable Pharoah Sanders who recently joined the ancestors”, quotes Lewis, the collection of songs drawing from the likes of Adam Rudolph, Alice Coltrane, and Pharoah Sanders himself.
